Face scan for UV damage and more - Skin assessment at Kiehl's

I have passed by the Kiehl's store in malls so many times without ever really going in. But one day they were having a masterclass on "An Expert's Guide to Sun Protection."

We stopped in and learned more about sun protection and to get our face scanned for UV damage and other skin details.

You rest your chin on the gray platform there, and rest your forehead against the gray knobs above it. They use a tablet to take photos of your face straight on, on the right side, and on the left side of your face. They also use some other device to measure the hydration or something else of your face.

Then you get to see all the photos of you with areas highlighted on your face for clogged pores, dark circles under eyes, fine lines / wrinkles, UV damage, texture, brown spots and much more. It also tells you your hydration level of the skin on your face and also firmness. Wow it's crazy to see these results about your face from this assessment. Each attribute has a rating from 0 to 100% and apparently 80-100% numbers are good, and they email you the results after (the percentages, not the photos).

For me, UV damage was 62%, brown spots was 50%, visible pores was 66%. Yikes I gotta take care of my skin better. And of course they have people there to talk to you about what products may help your skin. I honestly thought it was a good wake up call to take sun protection more seriously and they had their sunscreen available for buy one, get one free, so we did that!

Some tips I learned about sun protection:

  • Even if you go outside for a couple minutes or if you stay inside all day, you should still use sunscreen because you even get skin damage from being in front of electronic devices like phones and computers.

  • If you're deficient in Vitamin D, you can still get the benefits of being in the sun without the UV damage if you put on sunscreen. As in, you don't have to go out bare faced.

  • Tint your car windows if you can that helps! People can get sun damage more on one side of their body if they drive a lot.

  • Wear 2 fingers worth of sunscreen, and reapply every 2 hours. Meaning squirt the sunscreen across your pointer and middle fingers and that should be enough for your face and ears. Don't forget your neck, back of your neck, hands, etc.

Alright there you have it, wear sunscreen! And get a face analysis at Kiehl's if you want to get an assessment on how you're doing so far! I went to the Kiehl's in Valley Fair Mall in San Jose but you can find other locations near you.
